A Competitive Step Team for Ages 12-17 at BlackRock Center for the Arts

About G-ROCK

Welcome to G-Rock, a competitive all-star step team for Grades 6 and up. We believe that the pure power of body, movement, and voice bring voice to conflict, improve mental wellness, and create camaraderie. Step is a whole-body percussive movement practiced by African American fraternities and sororities based in African dance traditions creates a powerful and compelling artistic experience.

About the Instructor

Deidra Squire has been dancing for more than 30 years. She was trained at Ballet Met Dance Academy in Columbus, Ohio and Judy Conti Dance Academy in Youngstown Ohio. She founded a dance team at Hampton

University. Deidra has taught dance at studios throughout the DMV and has led several award-winning steps teams for middle and high school aged youth. She has trained step teams to win national step competitions. Deidra believes in teaching dance to help students build self-esteem and a sense of personal excellence.

Attendance Policy & Code of Conduct

Due to the cumulative nature of this program, attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required unless a COVID-19 positive test prevents students from attending. One planned absence due to vacation is also permitted, but the date must be submitted prior to June 1, 2023.
 

CODE OF CONDUCT

G-Rock been designed to benefit its participants academically, physically, and spiritually. The goal of this program is to allow students to discover and develop their artistic interests, gifts, and talents while upholding responsibility, teamwork, and commitment as the primary goal. Moreover, through involvement in this program, students will become well rounded individuals who possess the skills and talents that will make them competitive in their future athletic, academic, and personal endeavors.
 

Because involvement in G-Rock is a privilege, it is expected that students will exhibit good character at all times. It must be understood, that the image that performers demonstrate will be considered by community members to be the image and standard of the community center. Therefore, students are required to abide by the standards set forth in the

G-ROCK Code of Conduct at all times; the rules that follow should be considered to apply for the duration of their participation. The expectation is excellence, good citizenship, scholastic achievement, moral soundness, and respectfulness.

 

Each student and parent is expected to thoroughly review this document. Failure to comply fully with the standards set forth in this document will result in the loss of privileges for the involved student.
