Learn to play West African drum rhythms from Guniea and Senegal along with folklore songs in this fun and exciting class. Students will review basic hand technique with emphasis on the three basic tones: slap, open, and bass. Students will also have chance to learn the basic stick technique for playing the following drums: djundjun, songba, and kenkeni. The class will discuss the meaning of each rhythm and how it is traditionally performed in Africa, and is taught at the same time as West African Dance, so students will have the opportunity to collaborate together. Students should bring their own djembes and dunduns drums, if possible. However a minimum number of drums will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at each class.
