About the Event

Description:

Inscape Chamber Orchestra returns to BlackRock Center for the Arts to perform three unique works spanning the European continent.  Danish composer Carl Nielsen's Serenata in vano  -  a short work the composer termed a "humorous trifle" - opens the program.  Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu's Nonet was written in the last year of his life.  Sunny and exuberant, the work calls on nine players in a rich neoclassical style full of twists, turns, and rambunctious rhythm.  The program concludes with Igor Stravinsky's Suite from The Soldier's Tale. Stravinsky wrote this iconic work while living in Switzerland in the aftermath of WWII.  Originally a theater work, it tells the story of a soldier who trades his fiddle to the devil in return for unlimited economic gain.  At once precient, and timeless, Inscape performs a suite of short movements taken from the original theater work.

Program:

Carl Nielsen: Seranata in vano

Bohuslav Marinu: Nonet No. 2

Igor Stravinsky: Suite from L'Histoire du soldat (The Soldier's Tale)
