BlackRock looks to kick off the New Year in an electrifying fashion when award-winning blues legend Johnny Rawls makes his way to the Studio Theater. On Friday, January 11 at 8 p.m. the residents of Germantown will wash away those holiday blues and join Rawls as he shows the audience why he has been a household name of the blues industry throughout his 50-year career.
Johnny Rawls is widely considered a blues legend, and for good reason. Rawls has been nominated for 12 Blues Music Awards as well as receiving recognition from the likes of the Blues Blast Awards, Living Blues Critics Poll Awards, and the W.C. Handy Awards. He has shared the stage with iconic blues artists throughout the course of his career including names like B.B. King, Little Milton, ZZ Hill, Little Johnny Taylor, and O.V. Wright.
Born in Hattiesburg, Miss., Rawls was deeply immersed in the blues music scene since he was a child. He credits his grandfather for laying the foundation of what would go on to be an award-winning handle on the strings. After a career-altering stint with O.V. Wright and his band, Rawls would begin touring as a solo artist in 1985, not releasing his debut solo album, “Here We Go,” until 1996. With over a dozen albums in his discography, Rawls has been honored with numerous awards for his stellar mastery of the blues including winning ‘Best Soul Blues Album of the Year’ for his 2009 album “Ace of Spades,” as well as his 2017 album “Waiting for the Train” earning him a nomination for ‘Soul Blues Album of the Year’ and ‘Soul Blues Male Artist’.
