FALL MUSIC CLASSES

West African Drumming with Soul in Motion Players
This class is presented through a partnership with Soul in Motion Players, Inc.
Learn to play West African drum rhythms from Guniea and Senegal along with folklore songs in this fun and exciting class. Students will review basic hand technique with emphasis on the 3 basic tones: slap, open, and bass. Students will also have chance to learn the basic stick technique for playing the following drums: djundjun, songba, and kenkeni. The class will discuss the meaning of each rhythm learned and how it is traditionally performed in Africa. Students should bring their own djembes and dunduns drums if possible, however a minimum number of drums will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at each class.

Introduction to Piano – Non-Conservatory
This class is designed for those families with students who wish to start learning piano but are not necessarily ready to commit to a full academic year of study. Students will study the fundamentals and start developing note-reading skills, learning to play some of their favorite songs. Students must bring headphones, ¼ inch audio adapter, and book to each class.

Guitar

Guitar classes are taught for steel string acoustic guitars only and not classical guitars. Students are to supply their own instruments. Please make sure you have or purchase the correct instrument. Guitar classes starting at 5:30pm or later may be subject to a start time change on the date of the class. The first session of every guitar class will be less than an hour in length and involve a consultation with the instructor concerning appropriate equipment and class supplies. Students need to bring their guitar and music stand to each class.

Beginning Guitar
Learn the rudiments of guitar including the name of strings, parts of the guitar, the musical alphabet, music symbols, pick technique, and playing while singing. The last class will be a demonstration that is open for family and friends.

Intermediate Guitar

Expanding on the basics of guitar, students will work of finger coordination, learning more chords, and increasing speed. Students will also learn the different ways of communicating in musical terms and the different ways to write guitar music including symbology, chord boxes and strum patterns. Students in this class are expected to already understand the rudiments of music, parts of guitar, and how to use a guitar tuner.

Advanced Guitar Performance

This class is for those who knows how to play the guitar but wants to take their performance and skills to the next level. Students in this class must have a complete understanding of the musical alphabet, guitar string names, pick techniques, coordination of voice and strum techniques, and know how to play songs with more than 3 chords. Students will learn intermediate level songs from the American Repertoire including Classic Jazz, Rock, and Blues and Improvisation over chord changes.

Ukulele
Learn to play the ukulele in this fun and engaging class. Students will learn how to strum chords, their instrument, coordinate strumming and singing, and a number of singable songs. You will be guided through this process placing emphasis on the importance of tempo and time all while enjoying this delightful instrument.

CONSERVATORY MUSIC CLASSES

Piano and violin conservatories are our offerings for the focused study of music. The piano program is meant to be taken in sequence over a five-year period and covers all basic levels of experience. There is also an advanced class for students who have completed Level 4. All music conservatory classes culminate in our spring conservatory recitals.
