WINTER MUSIC CLASSES

NEW ADULT CLASS! West African Drumming (& Dance) w/ Soul in Motion Players, Inc.

The Soul In Motion Players, Inc. West African Drum/Dance class is a combination instructor led class. While learning the skills, rhythms and techniques of West African-style drumming, our drum students will have additional time during each class to play for a tandem West African dance class. This allows students to apply their new-found drumming techniques as they learn. Drum students should bring their own instruments if possible (djembes and dunduns). A minimum number of drums will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at each class.

NEW TEEN AND ADULT CLASS! Traditional Music Jam

For ages 14 through adult playing violin/fiddle, mandolin, guitar, upright bass, banjo, flute, pennywhistle, accordion, concertina, hammered dulcimer, bodhran, or harp. Students will play Irish, Scottish, and American traditional music in a jam session setting. Instruction will be given on the history and types of traditional music and styles. Students will learn exercises
to help with speed and dexterity for faster tempos as well as how to play well in a group setting.  Each student will need to bring their instrument, “The Fiddler’s Fake Book” by David Brody, an electronic tuner, (or phone app) and a 3 ring binder for handouts. Prerequisite: Students must be able to read music well and be proficient with their own instrument.

NEW TEEN AND ADULT CLASS! Irish, Scottish and American Fiddle

This class includes both reading music and learning by ear, identifying and being able to play different types of music within the genre, (jigs, reels, hornpipes, strathspeys, etc.) exercises for speed, dexterity, and bowing, memorization, the basics of back up, harmonizing, and improvisation. Each student will need a violin and bow, “The Fiddler’s Fake Book” by David Brody, an electronic tuner, metronome, recording device, (phone apps are acceptable) and a 3-ring binder for handouts. Prerequisites: Students must be able to play and read music well with quarter and eighth notes/rests in 1 and 2 sharps.

Vocal Boot Camp

This four-week class is an excellent opportunity for high school students to gain confidence in singing on stage and for auditions. Students will learn important skills like projection and posture, but also song selection and performance techniques. Nail your audition for your next school show, gain confidence and skills for college or university auditions and become a rounded and versatile vocal performer.

NEW! Jazz Instrument Individual Lessons

These lessons are for students who have successfully mastered the rudiments of sax, flute, clarinet or jazz guitar and wish to deepen their skills through explorations of jazz playing. The student will begin with jazz interpretation of notes and rhythms using classic jazz songs considered the standard repertoire of America. Each student is treated individually in respect to their personal level and receive (one-on-one) 1 hour sessions focusing on sound and technical proficiency as well as building a repertoire. Parents interested in these courses should call the Education Department Registrar at 240-912-1062 to register.

Guitar classes starting at 5:30 PM or later may be subject to a start time change on the date of the class. The first session of every guitar class will be less than an hour in length and involve a consultation with the instructor concerning appropriate equipment and class supplies.

There is also an advanced class for students who
