SPRING MUSIC CLASSES

New!  Let’s Sing

Sing a song with us! Students in this class will learn vocal techniques that will inspire them to belt out some old familiar tunes and learn some great new ones. Your child will learn songs and dances and put them together for a mini musical experience. Expect surprises and fun in this interactive and creative singing class. During the final class you will get a chance to see your new star perform what they have learned throughout the session. West African Drumming workshop with Soul In Motion Players, INC.   Adult Class!

The Soul in Motion Players, Inc. African Drum Workshop is a combination instructor lead class with our West African Dance Class. While learning the skills, rhythms and techniques of West African-style drumming, our drum students will have additional time during each class to play for a tandem West African dance class. This allows students to apply their new-found drumming techniques as they learn. Drum students should bring their own instruments if possible (djembes and dunduns). A minimum number of drums will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at each class.

This is the perfect class to teach you the basics of this fun instrument like strumming chords and tuning, and learn sign-able songs. Accomplished instructor, Jesse Meman will guide you through this process placing emphasis on the importance of tempo and time, and the coordination of voice and strumming.

New!  Fiddling for Violinists

For ages 13 through adult who have been playing the violin/fiddle and are interested in learning for the first time or furthering their experience with traditional fiddle styles. This class includes both reading music and learning by ear, identifying and being able to play different types of music within the genre, (jigs, reels, hornpipes, waltzes, etc.) exercises for speed, dexterity, and bowing, memorization, the basics of back up, harmonizing, and improvisation. Prerequisites: the student must be able to play and read music with quarter and eighth notes/rests in 1 and 2 sharps. Each student will need a violin and bow, The Fiddler’s Fake Book by David Brody, a 3-ring binder, an electronic tuner, metronome, and recording device (phone apps for these are ok.)

Traditional Music Jam

For ages 13 through adult playing violin/fiddle, mandolin, guitar, upright bass, banjo, flute, pennywhistle, accordion, concertina, hammered dulcimer, bodhran, or harp.  Students will play Irish, Scottish, and American traditional music in a jam session setting. Instruction will be given on the various types of traditional music and styles, history of some of the music, some exercises will be given to help with speed and dexterity for fast tempos, and there will be an emphasis on how to play well in a group setting. Students must be able to read music well (quarter and eighth notes and rests, with 1 and 2 sharps at a tempo of mm=70/quarter note or faster) and be proficient with their own instrument. (Note: This class does not include instruction on how to play the instruments.) Musicians who are currently in the “Irish, Scottish, and American Fiddle” class are encouraged to take this class, also. Each student will need to bring their instrument, “The Fiddler’s Fake Book” by David Brody, an electronic tuner, (or phone app) and a 3 ring binder.

Guitar classes starting at 5:30 PM or later may be subject to a start time change on the date of the class. The first session of every guitar class will be less than an hour in length and involve a consultation with the instructor concerning appropriate equipment and class supplies.

NEW! Private Instrument Lessons

Beginners: New this season we will be offering private lessons at the beginner level for the following instruments: Guitar, Clarinet, Flute, and Saxophone. Experience the benefits of one-on-one instruction here at BlackRock.

Advanced: These lessons are for students who have successfully mastered the rudiments of the following instruments: Guitar, Clarinet, Flute, Saxophone, Trumpet, and Trombone. This is perfect for anyone who wishes to deepen their skills. The student will begin with interpretation of notes and rhythms using classic jazz songs considered the standard repertoire of America. 8 sessions total. Each session is 1 hour.

Each student is treated individually in respect to their personal level with sessions focusing on sound and technical proficiency as well as building a repertoire. Ages 10 and up Start date and time will be mutually agreed upon between student and instructor.

Piano and violin conservatories are our offerings for the focused study of music. The piano program is meant to be taken in sequence over a five-year period and covers all basic levels of experience.
There is also an advanced class for students who
have completed Level 4. All music conservatory classes culminate in spring conservatory recitals:
