BlackRock in a Box
BlackRock in a Box is a virtual fine arts and literacy program for students in grades K-5. The content of each box, containing art tools and materials with a book to promote vocabulary and conversations, is inspired by a theme such as “Love the Skin You’re In” and “The Future is Bright. Students come together virtually with a BlackRock Teaching Artist, a certified art instructor, in lessons that develop art skills and concepts such as drawing, painting, and sculpting, as well as expression and interpretation of the theme.
In Summer 2020, support for the BlackRock in a Box program was provided by a grant from the Children’s Opportunity Fund, 100 books from the Global Fund for Children, and several donations from supporters. Their combined generosity sustained BlackRock’s mission to narrow the achievement gap among our youth by providing more than 80 rising first and second grade students with a rich arts education and literacy experience.
The Fall 2020, we are introducing BlackRock in a Box: Puppet Theater, a weekly class aimed at young people in K-2. With the materials sent by BlackRock, children will make their own puppet, learn puppetry techniques with teaching artist Hannah Ensign, and write a puppet show with a group of their peers.
What BlackRock in a Box Students Say
“I learned to always forgive yourself and how to draw realistic eyes and a nose.”
“I like that we could be unique with our painting. I like that I made some friends. I also like that everybody's painting was different."
