The cult following The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), or audience participation, is a cultural phenomenon surrounding the large fan base of enthusiastic participants of the movie generally credited as being the best-known cinematic "midnight movie", if not the first. The film gained popularity because of fan participation as much as anything else.

"Shadow Casts" of fans acting out the entire movie below, or in some cases directly in front of the screen, are almost always present at showings.

"Shadow Casts" of fans acting out the entire movie below, or in some cases directly in front of the screen, are almost always present at showings.

We are seeking any and all RHPS fans who have a desire to help lead BlackRock's first ever
THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW interactive film event!

Ages 18+ (non-union)
Due to mature content all cast will be over 18.

BlackRock Center for the Arts strongly encourages performers of all ethnicities, gender identities,
and body types, as well as performers with disabilities, to submit.

Due to the Current COVID-19 Pandemic – we are accepting electronic submissions only.
Please submit headshot, résumé, and a self-taped video recording of a 16-32 bar cut from the show
(you are welcome to sing, but, in the live performance the actors are acting out the movie on the front of
the stage while the film is showing, so, you can record yourself lip syncing along to your
preferred song from the film itself).

Rehearsals will be limited and scheduled based on cast availability.

All participants are required to wear a mask when indoors, during rehearsals, and when backstage.
When actors are performing on stage, they are welcome to remove their mask.
All participants must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination upon submitting participation application.
A COVID-19 test the week of the performance may be required.

Sweethearts Brad and Janet, stuck with a flat tire during a storm, discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker and a creepy butler. Through elaborate dances and rock songs, Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: a muscular man named “Rocky.”

Watch the video above to check out some of Nuart Theatre's audience participation.

During a showing, ad-lib responses, more commonly known as call backs, are lines the audience may shout out in response to events occurring on screen, as a form of audience participation. In some venues, audience members who provide incorrect or poorly timed responses may find themselves angrily shouted down just as if they were being disruptive in a normal movie. However, creative new lines are usually applauded and even added to the local repertoire. There have been audience participation albums recorded and scripts published. However, most fans feel that it is preferable for responses to grow organically from the local culture.

BlackRock is committed to ensuring an environment that is free of discrimination and to fostering a climate in which all staff, students, volunteers, and artists may participate and contribute. We recognize and value our diverse population and are committed to fair treatment of all. Harassment and disparate treatment based on race, color, national origin, sex, handicap/disability, age, or religion will not be permitted or condoned in our organization.

It is also important that as part of this event we take the opportunity to recognize that this film came out 46 years ago and that the representation of the LGBTQ+ community in the film and musical may not be reflective of how the LGBTQ+ community is represented now. In addition to all the campy fun and hysterics that audiences expect and will experience at this event, BlackRock will use this as an opportunity to bring attention to and share resources about the importance of inclusion and representation in the arts.
