EXHIBIT DESCRIPTION: The most competitive watercolor exhibit in the region, the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition is the annual juried exhibition sponsored by the Baltimore Watercolor Society (BWS), which was founded in 1885 by a group of five women artists in Baltimore, MD. Now in its 134th year, BWS is the nation’s third oldest watercolor organization, after the American Watercolor Society, founded in 1866 in New York, NY, and the Boston Watercolor Society, which was also founded in 1885 in Boston, MA. Limited to original paintings created using aqueous media (mainly watercolor, acrylic, gouache, casein) on natural or synthetic paper or board, the exhibit includes selected works created by up to 95 artists from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC. The juror this year is renowned watercolor artist David Lobenberg, who selected the works on view as well as the winners of the Gold Medal ($1,200 prize), Silver Medal ($900 prize), and Bronze Medal ($600 prize) and 15+ other designated awards worth more than $8,000 in cash and sponsored prizes. Visitors may cast a vote for their favorite painting to help select the winner of the People’s Choice Award.
