EXHIBIT DESCRIPTION: Using bold and expressionistic brushstrokes, Frank Cole paints images of sky and ocean in an effort to communicate his feelings about human arrogance toward nature and indifference regarding environmental threats and climate change. In his solo exhibition Rebuilding The Sky, he presents 26 works which include 15 selections from his ongoing series of large-scale, mixed media paintings which explore the folly of trying to rebuild a sky carelessly destroyed and underlying themes of both human and environmental vulnerability. The artist stretches canvas over panels to support the addition of strips of wood, metal rods, shards of stone and other collaged materials. Cole, who generally works with acrylic but also uses oil, incorporates the titles of each painting — which include “Replacement Sunset” and “Dismantling the Storm” and “The Installation of Rainfall”— by stamping individual letters to clearly imbed text directly on the canvas to be sure his message clear. Cole, who was a Finalist in the 2017 Bethesda Painting Awards, has shown in galleries in Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, DC and his work is in numerous corporate and private collections. He earned his MFA at Yale University in New Haven, CT and his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Cole, who has been a resident of Rockville, MD for more than 20 years, grew up in Virginia and has also lived in Florida and Thailand.
