Exploring the effects of time, memory, and our relationships with one another and our environment, Michelle Dickson presents a new series of mixed media drawings alongside an ongoing series of sculpture in her solo exhibition entitled Neither Mine Nor Yours. The nine sculptural works on display combine found natural materials, including driftwood, with hauntingly life-like plaster casts of her own face. Dickson begins her sculpting process on hikes in nature to find unusual pieces of wood which she then brings to her studio to begin the intuitive process of building then carving away layers of plaster, wax, and oil paint. In Dickson’s series of six untitled mixed media drawings, she combines skillful use of colored pencil, watercolor, and both additive and subtractive sculptural techniques to create layered portraits of women at various stages of life which she seals in a thick layer of resin as if to stop the aging process. Her sculptural works and drawings simultaneously dip back and forth across lines that separate presence and absence, tension and release, the beautiful and the grotesque, producing work that often lands in the overlap of attraction and repulsion. The textures of skin and bark weave seamlessly in and out of each other, as she melds human and natural forms to emphasize our dependence on nature and the paradox of our abuse and destruction of the environment.
