EXHIBIT DESCRIPTION: The most competitive watercolor exhibit in the region, the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition is the annual juried exhibition sponsored by the Baltimore Watercolor Society (BWS). Founded in 1885 by a group of five women artists in Baltimore, BWS is the nation’s third oldest watercolor organization, after the American Watercolor Society, founded in 1866 in New York, and the Boston Watercolor Society, which was also founded in 1885. For the organization’s 135th annual competition, entries are limited to original paintings created using aqueous media — mainly watercolor, acrylic, gouache, and casein — on natural or synthetic paper or board, by artists from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC. This year the exhibit includes 100 works selected from more than 400 submissions by juror Linda Daly Baker renowned watercolor artist. Baker also selected the winners of the BWS Gold Medal ($1,500 prize), BWS Silver Medal ($1,200 prize), BWS Bronze Medal ($1,000 prize), and 15 other sponsored awards for which she has provided remarks on each of the award winning paintings. While the exhibit is on view online, through August 31, visitors are encouraged to cast a virtual vote to help select who will win the "People's Choice Award," which will be announced in September.
