Kuchipudi Classical Indian Dance for Adults
This class is presented through a partnership with the Kuchipudi Dance Academy.
Join this class now to explore the Indian classical dance form, Kuchipudi, along with the flavors of Indian performing arts and authentic beats of music. This class will be a work out as well and will provide you with the background and technique needed to understand classical dance. Much like ballet, it is structured yet graceful with fluid movements.

West African Dance
This class is presented through a partnership with Soul in Motion Players, Inc.
Come and explore the vibrant, expressive, energy-filled world of West African dance. Learn the movements, style, rhythms, and significance of dances from West Africa, all while having a fantastic time with professional instructors.  This class is taught at the same time as our West African Drumming class, so students will enjoy being accompanied by live drumming.  It’s suggested that dance students wear a traditional lapa for the class. A lapa is a large piece of African fabric that is wrapped around the waist of the dancer.

Improv for Adults
The purpose of this class is to excite and introduce participants to improvisational acting and the universality of its practices in our everyday lives. The class is fun, collaborative and builds confidence, teamwork and communication skills. Short-form games and various improvisational exercises will be introduced throughout the class, demonstrating each week’s focus and leading to a group performance open to public. Instructor, Callan Holderbaum, currently performs with The Comedy Pigs; a 20-year-old Improv Comedy Troupe in Frederick, MD.

Sitting Circus

Are you a kid at heart or fondly remember the excitement of the circus? This is the class for you.  Explore various individual circus skills like juggling, balancing items, spinning plates and simple magic tricks along with group activities like ball and parachute games.  Even learn fun tongue twisters, songs, theater games and clowning.  All games and activities in this class can be facilitated so everyone can participate regardless of mobility or dexterity.

Music

West African Drumming
This class is presented through a partnership with Soul in Motion Players, Inc.
Learn to play West African drum rhythms from Guniea and Senegal along with folklore songs in this fun and exciting class. Students will review basic hand technique with emphasis on the 3 basic tones: slap, open, and bass. Students will also have chance to learn the basic stick technique for playing the following drums: djundjun, songba, and kenkeni. The class will discuss the meaning of each rhythm and how it is traditionally performed in Africa, and is taught at the same time as West African Dance, so students will have the opportunity to collaborate together. Students should bring their own djembes and dunduns drums if possible, however a minimum number of drums will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at each class.

Guitar

Candice Mowbray

Guitar classes are taught for both acoustic and classical guitars. Students must provide their own guitars, a pick, folding music stand, folder, pencil and the text “Everybody’s Guitar Method Book 1 (with CD).” Other optional but useful supplies include a guitar strap, tuner and metronome.

Classes are taught by Dr. Candice Mowbray, who has earned her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Classical Guitar Performance and has been profiled in Classical Guitar Magazine. She has appeared at many prestigious music festivals and concert series as a soloist, chamber musician, and guest lecturer.


Beginning Guitar Adults

Have you bought a guitar that’s gathering dust in the basement? Have you always wanted to learn how to play your favorite song on the guitar?  This is the class for you.  Learn to strum chords, read music, finger pick and more.  This group class is a fantastic way to learn the basics of guitar and be introduced to a variety of musical styles, while having a great time.  Register with a friend, make it family time and register with your teenage son or daughter, or come on your own and make new friends while you start your new favorite hobby.

Introduction to Piano – Non-Conservatory
This class is designed for those families with students who wish to start learning piano but are not necessarily ready to commit to a full academic year of study. Students will study the fundamentals and start developing note-reading skills, learning to play some of their favorite songs. These are group classes where students will experience both group and individual instruction. Students must bring headphones, ¼ inch audio adapter, and book to each class.

Visual Arts

The Art of Drawing
In this course students will learn the techniques of drawing using charcoal, sanguine, color pencils, and oil and soft pastels, to capture a variety of interesting subjects including still life scenes, models, and more. Students will explore the elements of art including line, shape, form, value and texture, as well as the principals of composition and perspective and be introduced to the grid system and other methods of drawing.

This class does not include a materials fee. Students will be required to purchase supplies for class including a drawing pad, charcoal sticks, pencils, etc. Full supply list will be provided at the first class.

Exploring International Pop Art
Pop Goes the World in this fun and fascinating class. Learn about the international Pop Art movement and its artists as you tour the world.  Be inspired by works from Scottish artist Eduardo Paolozzi, who is considered one the pioneers of pop art, English painter and collage artist Richard Hamilton, and American artist Larry Rivers.  You will then draw, paint, collage, and use mixed media techniques to create your own pieces inspired by these artists.

“Still Life with Lemons and Pears” by Matthew Bird

 Watercolor Still Life
Built around the classical Dutch still life, this in-depth and exciting class will move students from small studies to a larger finished work by the end of the season.  Students will practice washing, glazing and pouring techniques, as well as values, composition and color theory.  Participate in demonstrations, lessons, and critiques while receiving lots of individual help. Students can bring in their own still life objects, or work from instructor set up.  Come experience this dramatic and intense style from the old masters, while learning from a new one.

Exploring Watercolor with David Daniels
This four part workshop is designed to help students learn the basics of watercolor while encouraging experimentation and self-expression. Students will explore paint application, color theory, composition, and most importantly setting personal goals. Individualized critiques and customized assignments will help you define and become the artist you want to be. This workshop is open for all skill levels and will help you create vibrant, personality filled works of art.

Affectionately known as Mr. Watercolor, David Daniels is an instructor for the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, DC. For the past two years he has been the Visual Arts Director of the Amalfi Coast Music and Arts Festival in Italy. He has also taught painting and design at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD, as well as workshops around the world. David’s interactive approach and humor are often recognized as his strongest teaching tools.

Matthew Bird is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society and the Baltimore Watercolor Society (BWS). His award-winning watercolor paintings have been exhibited in juried shows across the United States, as well as in Canada, China, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, and seen on the pages of The Artist Magazine,” “Watercolor Magazine,” and “Fine Art Connoisseur.” Matthew’s work has also appeared here in BlackRock’s Kay Gallery several times, and is a two time winner of the People’s Choice Award at BWS Mid-Atlantic Regional Exhibitions.

 

Glass Workshops

Fused Glass Plate
In this one day workshop, explore the basics of fusing glass, including how to cut glass, the effect of temperature on glass, and how to layer the glass to make your own beautiful fused glass 6” x 6” plate. Bring some friends or make new ones in this fun and exciting class where your imagination and creativity can run wild.

You will create your plate in the workshop. Pieces will then be fired and ready for you to pick it up within 2 weeks.

Stained Glass Box
Come create a 3-D stained glass box with a beautiful fused glass lid. Whether you are a beginner and have never cut glass before, or are looking to move your glass skills up to the next level, this class is sure to delight.  We are offering an opportunity to learn all about fused glass, including cutting glass, understanding the effect of temperature on glass, and layering glass to be fused into one piece.  The first week of the class you will create a fused glass lid, and subsequently you will learn stained glass box construction, including copper foil and 3-D soldering.  At the end of the class you will have your very own unique hinged glass box with a fused glass lid.

Besides working in his studio, The Lead and Light Studio in Boyds, MD, Fran’s work can be found in private collections locally, nationally, and in Europe and Australia.  His major work to date is a 35 square foot window in the entry courtyard and lobby of N Street Village, Washington, DC.  He has executed commercial commissions for Global Database Systems, Inc. in Rockville, MD, Barry’s Magic Shop in Wheaton, MD, and for the Montgomery County Historical Society’s Waters House located in Germantown, MD.
