This class is presented through a partnership with the Kuchipudi Dance Academy.
Explore the Indian classical dance form, Kuchipudi, along with the flavors of Indian performing arts and authentic beats. This class will be a workout and will provide you with the background and technique needed to understand classical dance. Much like ballet, it is structured yet graceful with fluid movements.

Theater

Improv for Adults
The purpose of this class is to excite and introduce participants to improvisational acting and the universality of its practices in our everyday lives. The class is fun, collaborative and builds confidence, teamwork and communication skills. Short-form games and various improvisational exercises will be introduced throughout the class, demonstrating each week’s focus and leading to a group performance open to public. Instructor, Callan Holderbaum, currently performs with The Comedy Pigs; a 20-year-old Improv Comedy Troupe in Frederick, MD.

Explore various individual circus skills like juggling, balancing items, spinning plates and simple magic tricks along with group activities like ball and parachute games. Even learn fun tongue twisters, songs, theater games and clowning. All games and activities in this class can be facilitated so everyone can participate regardless of mobility or dexterity.

NEW! Writing Out Loud – Playwriting Workshop for Older Adults
This playwriting workshop is designed to give students a chance to find their voice and writing style by working with dialogue to bring their own personal stories and experience to life. Students will work with a variety of writing techniques and exercises, explore the basics of writing for the stage, and practice story development all while building new friendships through the shared joy of telling stories. Final pieces will be presented as staged readings at the last class.

Beginning Guitar
Learn the rudiments of guitar including the name of strings, parts of the guitar, the musical alphabet, music symbols, pick technique, and playing while singing. The last class will be a demonstration that is open for family and friends. Instructor: Jesse Meman

Intermediate Guitar
Expanding on the basics of guitar, students will work of finger coordination, learning more chords, and increasing speed. Students will also learn the different ways of communicating in musical terms and the different ways to write guitar music including symbology, chord boxes and strum patterns. Students in this class are expected to already understand the rudiments of music, parts of guitar, and how to use a guitar tuner. Instructor: Jesse Meman

Advanced Guitar Performance
This class is for those who knows how to play the guitar but wants to take their performance and skills to the next level. Students in this class must have a complete understanding of the musical alphabet, guitar string names, pick techniques, coordination of voice and strum techniques, and know how to play songs with more than 3 chords. Students will learn intermediate level songs from the American Repertoire including Classic Jazz, Rock, and Blues and Improvisation over chord changes.

Learn to play the ukulele in this fun and engaging class. Students will learn how to strum chords, their instrument, coordinate strumming and singing, and a number of singable songs. West African Drumming with Soul in Motion Players
This class is presented through a partnership with Soul in Motion Players, Inc.
Learn to play West African drum rhythms from Guniea and Senegal along with folklore songs in this fun and exciting class. Students will review basic hand technique with emphasis on the 3 basic tones: slap, open, and bass. Students will also have chance to learn the basic stick technique for playing the following drums: djundjun, songba, and kenkeni. The class will discuss the meaning of each rhythm learned and how it is traditionally performed in Africa. Students should bring their own djembes and dunduns drums if possible, however a minimum number of drums will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at each class. Instructor: Michael Friend and Soul in Motion Drummers

NEW! Private Instrument Lessons

Beginners: New this season we will be offering private lessons at the beginner level for the following instruments: Alto-Saxophone, Guitar, Clarinet, Flute, and Saxophone. Experience the benefits of one-on-one instruction here at BlackRock.

Advanced: These lessons are for students who have successfully mastered the rudiments of the following instruments: Alto-Saxophone, Guitar, Clarinet, Flute, Saxophone, Trumpet, and Trombone. This is perfect for anyone who wishes to deepen their skills. The student will begin with interpretation of notes and rhythms using classic jazz songs considered the standard repertoire of America. 8 sessions total. Each session is 1 hour.
Each student is treated individually in respect to their personal level with sessions focusing on sound and technical proficiency as well as building a repertoire.

Visual Arts

NEW! Cubism
Learn about one of the most of the most influential art movements of the 20th century. Explore the characters, periods, and artists starting with early Cubism and Cézannisme, then continue with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Using acrylic painting and collage techniques you will create your own unique pieces inspired by famous Cubist artists. This class is the perfect mix of learning and creating.

Drawing the Human Figure
As an introduction to this course, students will explore the elements of art: line, shape, form, value and texture, as well as the principals of composition and perspective. Once these topics are covered, students will move on to learn about proportion and measurements of the body, face, hands, and feet. Students will draw from pictures and models and will work with grid systems, using a variety of drawing media. Projects will begin in class with some pieces needing to be completed at home and brought back complete the following class.
This class does not include a materials fee. Students will be required to purchase supplies for class including a drawing pad, charcoal sticks, pencils, etc. Full supply list will be provided at the first class.

Calling all moms, dads, grandparents, and guardians. This multi-arts discipline class will have your child enjoying a morning of music, dance, arts and crafts, and other fun activities while you run some errands, spend time with friends, or just relax. This delightful class will introduce your child to the arts while promoting social interactions, motor skills, listening to directions and other valuable developmental skills. Children must be potty trained and able to be in class without a parent present.

You and Me Art
Young students will learn the building blocks of artistic expression through fun arts and crafts activities. Each week students will be introduced to new arts materials and will leave with a fun whimsical project. Students will engage and interact with others in class and bond with their caregiver. Tuition is required for the child but the adult (must be 18 or older) who takes the class with them is FREE.
